I have been to a lot of places where people are trying to find a home, a lost identity, a reason for being. But then you get to a place like this, a group that calls itself a fortress for the white race in the Ozark hills, and you realize they are not looking for something new. They are just looking for an escape from the modern world.
They talk about a return to the land, a private club for a very specific kind of person. They use legalistic jargon and private membership associations, as if a few well placed buzzwords can somehow scrub the fear and hate from the floorboards. It is a stage play they are putting on for themselves, with a carefully vetted cast and a script written a hundred years ago. They have walled themselves in, not to keep out the dangers of the world, but to keep out the messiness of actual humanity.
They are building fences and laying roads and talking about a path to power. But power for what? A lifetime of staring at your own reflection? This whole thing, this whole movement, is nothing but a fortress of their own fear and insecurity. A monument to being so terrified of the outside that they cannot see the emptiness of what is inside. They have traded the vibrant reality of a shared world for the airless confinement of their own anxieties. You do not build a community by hiding from the world. You just build a cage for yourself, and you spend your life rattling the bars.
